Madhur Singh aka the Placard Guy is a social media influencer. He identifies himself as a travel blogger and uses his public outreach, which is quite substantial, to spread the Hindu supremacist and anti-Muslim narrative. His signature style is to hold placards containing epithets, slogans, and statements that tend to bolster Hindu nationalist propaganda and mockingly degrade the Muslim predicament in the country.

Owing to his massive social media following, he is often invited to various podcasts as a Hindu youth icon. Accordingly, he exploits such platforms to shake out his vicious mentality.

In one of such podcasts, he ridiculed Muslims for opposing the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act that seeks to potentially disenfranchise Muslims. He even blamed Muslims for knowing nothing about the law and that they were protesting at the “behest of foreign conspirators who infused exorbitant amounts of money to stir up a rebellion against India.” The placard guy blatantly blamed Muslims for planning the anti-Muslim communal pogrom that took place in the national capital in 2020. He then resorted to victim-blaming and claimed that the anti-Muslim pogrom was actually a ‘well-planned’ anti-Hindu violence.

His audacity receives patronage from the highest echelons of power in the country. He is often seen in pictures with Bharatiya Janata Party’s top leaders like Smriti Irani, Nirmala Sitaraman, and Gautam Gambhir. He actively campaigned for the BJP in the 2019 general election.

‘Hindu lives matter’ read one of his placards while ‘Muslim lives matter’ and ‘I can’t breathe’ was trending in India, depicting the plight of Muslims in India in the wake of the brutal murder of George Floyd.
