Umesh Malik is a hardliner Hindu politician from Budhana in Uttar Pradesh. He is presently the MLA representing the Budhana assembly constituency for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
He is one of the accused of inciting anti-Muslim violence during the Muzaffarnagar riots in 2013 that left at least 62 people dead, mostly Muslims, and displaced 50,000 people.
He was arrested for his involvement in riots. In December 2017, a local court issued non-bailable warrants against Malik. He was accused of participating in a Mahapanchyat and giving hate speeches. He also faced charges under various sections of IPC for violating prohibitory orders, deterring public servants from discharging their duties, and wrongful restraint.
In March 2021, charges against Malik and other BJP leaders were dropped after the Yogi government submitted a plea to withdraw cases in the local court.
